This is the middle phase, and what I consider to be the awkward phase... where it's hard for anyone but me to tell where I am going and what the final painting will looking like.

The First Layer
Rebecca decided that 14x11 would be a good size for this work.

To start, I attached a layer of rice paper over the front and sides of a cradled panel. Using rice paper as the background gives an immediate Asian feel. Next, I started sketching out the map of Okinawa.

The Life of a Commissioned Painting: Part 1

The Story:
I am being commissioned by a gal named Rebecca to make a painting for her half sister, Sophia. These two ladies only met eachother recently through Facebook. Rebecca lives on the east coast, and Sophia currently lives in Okinawa, Japan. Even with all of that distance, they have become quite close. Sophia is returning to the states in April, and Rebecca wanted to be able to give her something very special to commemorate her time in Japan when they meet for the first time, and that's where my painting comes into play...

The Idea:
Rebecca and I sent a few emails back and forth talking about Sophia: what she likes and doesn't like, what's important to her, etc. In the end, I got about 20 snap shots of Sophia and her family plus one of her favorite quotes. I spent a few days processing what she had told me about Sophia and flipping through the pictures, and then it was time to pull everything together and sketch out some ideas, and send it on for approval. I was lucky... Rebecca loved the sketch and pretty much gave me creative freedom.

The Sketch:

A map of Okinawa, an origami swan based on the tattoo Sophia recently got, a well known gate to a castle in Okinawa, Sophia's favorite quote, and an adorable picture of her son, Tank, wearing her glasses; those were the elements I knew I wanted to incorporate.

What's New?

New Work!

Well, I've started a new series of paintings. I have all of these great photographs sitting in a file on my computer that I've wanted to do something with for quite awhile now, and I've finally begun:

I'm not totally sure what direction this is heading yet, but I've really enjoyed putting these together! And, as a bonus to me, my people seem pleased to be the subject of my art :)

I've finally bit the bullet and set up an etsy shop! I have been tossing the idea around for probably a year now, and just now finally pulled everything together to get it going. Right now, I have some of my smaller paintings and drawings listed, but plan to keep adding more listings. I have to admit that I've become a bit of an Etsy junky... you can find almost ANYTHING on there and why wouldn't you want to buy super cool handmade stuff directly from the artists/artisians/craftpersons???

MPR Interview w/ new MCAD president

Interesting interview on MPR this morning with the new MCAD president on the value of an MFA degree.

Although, in my opinion, the question being asked shouldn't be "Is an arts degree valuable?" but "How do we get the larger community to recognize the value of an arts degree?" Sadly, many people are still of the opinion that an arts degree prepares you for a career in pouring coffee. During every interview I've ever went on, I've been asked something to the effect of, "You have an arts degree? How does that relate to position? Is there anything you learned in your college experience that you feel would be a valuable asset here at ?"

Don't get me wrong, I am happy to explain the value of my degree and how it can relate to any job, it would just be really nice to hear some enthusiastically say, "Oh! You have an arts degree! How wonderfu!"
